About LED Boom
LED Boom is an independent, advertising-supported site built around six free lighting calculators, a handful of lighting guides, and a small Lighting Museum— nothing more elaborate than that. There is no company behind it beyond the person who maintains the tools and keeps the numbers current.
How the Tools Are Built
Every calculator on this site is a plain formula wearing a friendly form, not a hidden model. Here is what each one is actually doing:
- Lumens to Watts Calculator takes a bulb’s rated efficacy in lumens per watt (lm/W) — a figure printed on almost every LED box — and divides your target brightness by it to estimate the wattage you’d need. Higher efficacy means fewer watts for the same light output.
- Room Lumens Calculator multiplies a room’s floor area by a target illuminance in foot-candles to get the total lumens the space needs. The foot-candle targets we suggest for kitchens, offices, and living rooms come from widely published lighting-design tables, not from any testing of our own.
- LED Savings Calculator is a side-by-side comparison: the wattage difference between an old bulb and its LED replacement, multiplied by hours of use and your electricity rate in cost per kWh, gives an estimated yearly saving.
- LED Strip Power Calculator multiplies a strip’s length by its watts-per-metre rating, then adds a headroom margin on top — the kind of buffer strip and driver manufacturers commonly recommend — to land on the power-supply wattage to shop for.
- Color Temperature Guide is a reference rather than a calculator: it places a kelvin (K) reading into the warm, neutral, cool, or daylight bands used across the lighting industry, and notes which rooms and tasks each band tends to suit.
- Lux to Foot-candles Converter applies one fixed physical conversion — 1 foot-candle = 10.764 lux — in whichever direction you enter a number.
None of these figures are proprietary. They’re standard lighting-industry conventions and published formulas; the site’s job is just to package them into a form you can fill in without digging through a spec sheet or a textbook. The learn section and the blog go into more depth on the reasoning behind individual tools.
What This Site Is (And Isn’t)
A tool’s output is only as good as the numbers you put into it — results are estimates based on your inputs, not a measurement of your actual room, fixtures, or wiring. LED Boom is not affiliated with any lightbulb or fixture manufacturer, electrical-code body, or lighting-standards organization referenced on the site. The content here is general, informational, and educational — it is NOT professional electrical, safety, or design advice. Always follow product instructions and your local electrical code, and consult a qualified electrician for wiring and installation questions. This site is supported by advertising, which is how the tools and guides stay free to use.
